Every year, thousands of people on parole in California reenter society with little to no guidance on what it actually takes to get off parole.

Having navigated the complexities of the parole system myself, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is to be informed, especially when you’re dealing with a system that often lacks transparency. The moment I had access to real, clear information, I felt empowered to reclaim both my voice and my freedom.

That’s why Project Protocol teamed up with Initiate Justice to create A Roadmap to Discharging Parole in California. This step-by-step guide is not only a practical resource, it’s a blueprint for the reentry community. Created by and for people on parole, this guide exists to be shared, reused, and passed on. It’s a tool for collective knowledge, rooted in real experience. Because the system should be transparent, and the path forward shouldn’t be a mystery.
